Our Thursday Nature Explorers group had the opportunity to take part in something truly special and meaningful for our community this past Thursday, March 19.

At the invitation of Pender Parks and Recreation, participants shared ideas and input on the future of the wide open space at the entrance of Abbey Nature Preserve, our site for Tuesday and Thursday Nature Explorers programs. Elizabeth and Zach, representatives of Pender Parks and Recreation, explained that there are plans in place to develop the area and welcomed our group to take part in the process.

Together we explored possibilities for how the land could continue to grow and serve our community, considering elements like restrooms, an education center, murals, wildflower gardens, picnic areas with fire pits, playground designs and more.

Participants and facilitators had the chance to vote, share their preferences and think critically about what makes a space welcoming, meaningful and connected to nature. It was a powerful reminder that young people are not just learners but could also be active members of their community whose voices matter. Moments like these highlight the importance of civic engagement, learning how to share ideas, listen to others and take part in decisions that impact the community.

What made this experience more special is the timing. This March marks ten years of outdoor programming with Three Pines Project, which began as Nature Connect NC. Abbey Nature Preserve was one of our very first sites. Some of the students who shared their input on the development plans were part of those early programs. They have grown up exploring the original trails of Abbey Nature Preserve and watched the land change over time.

We are incredibly grateful to Pender Park and Recreation for welcoming us into Abbey Nature Preserve over the years and allowing us to use this space for our programs. Over time, we’ve spent close to 2,000 hours there, hiking the trails, exploring and learning. It has been a place of growth for so many of our students and we are very grateful to be part of its story. We are happy to support this beautiful space and we are looking forward to seeing how the place will continue to evolve to support the natural habitat as well as the community that's part of it.
